![]() Meeting on Tuesday evenings starting June 2, 2011 The YCKC Whitewater Kayaking Gang does not teach whitewater kayaking, but we do have a small group of dedicated volunteers and some loaner kayaks and gear that enable us to create an opportunity for beginner kayakers (or kayakers returning to the sport) to get involved in whitewater kayaking and share an exciting summer of paddling Yukon rivers. We will be networking, practicing skills, carpooling and generally supporting each other in having a great summer of paddling. The group will start out in the Yukon River and for the more adventuresome paddlers will progress onto more complex rivers. Who is this for? To get started in this group, each participant will be required to come to the group with a good understanding of what whitewater kayaking entails as far as risks involved and skills needed (you do not need to be a skilled kayaker but you do need to understand what you are getting into). Some of the knowledge and skills that the facilitators will be looking for are:
For someone just wanting to start whitewater kayaking this may seem like a daunting list but don’t despair! As stated earlier the YCKC does not teach kayaking but there are businesses in town who offer a very comprehensive beginner kayaking course that will cover all your basics and you will be introduced to some great skills that you can practice when you join the YCKC Whitewater kayakers. (Tatshenshini Expediting is offering a beginner whitewater kayaking courses check them out at www.tatshenshiniyukon.com) If you feel you have the basics already and want to give it a go, talk with the facilitators about your paddling experience as we need to be sure of where you are at before we send you out into the raging rapids!!!
